Kansspel Autoriteit updates the laws around match-fixing and money laundering

In preparation for the opening of the gaming market in the Netherlands in April 2021, the Netherlands Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) has updated the regulations it has in place regarding match fixing and money laundering. Act on the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (Wwft) has been updated by the body because it had previously only applied to the gaming casinos of Holland Casino, which is currently the only license holder in the country for offering casino games. The update was necessary because of this fact.

Nonetheless, in preparation for the upcoming legalization of online games of chance, the Gaming Authority has recently published certain new regulations. The Remote Gaming Act (Koa) will become operational on April 1, 2021; hence, beginning on that day, individuals will be able to begin submitting applications for online gambling licenses.

The new measures provide providers of games of chance with the resources necessary to comply with the duties resulting from the Wwft. These tools can also be used to aid in the preparation of documentation for the submission of an application for a Koa permit.

The WWFT Guideline had already been sent out for consultation to a number of different stakeholders, and the comments from those parties were utilized to clarify various sections of the document.

The addition of the risk of match fixing is one of the most significant changes that have been made to the WWFT Guideline as a result of the consultation. Other issues, including crediting and debiting the gaming account without undue delay, as well as identification and verification, have also been discussed.
