Monthly deposits over £5k are now subject to statutory checks, according to BGC.

 If a consumer wants to deposit more than £5,000 per month, the operator must do a risk assessment according to the new voluntary code of the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC).
 BGC code, BGC optional code, risk assessment, consultation round
 On May 1st, the BGC released their Code on Customer Checks.  Coexisting with the GB Gambling Commission's hassle-free affordability assessments will be the code.

 With today's announcement, the Commission officially launched the pilot program for frictionless checks.  This came with a schedule for when the other suggestions from the initial consultation on the Gambling Act review white paper will be put into action.

 The UK government supports the code, which was produced in collaboration with the Commission.  While the Commission's seamless checks are still in the preliminary testing phase, this voluntary temporary mechanism will be put into place.

 Financial risk evaluations that don't cause any friction were born out of comments made during the first round of consultations with the Commission last year.  Checks for affordability were the main topic of discussion at the time.  The Commission emphasised that neither the live environment nor the player credit scores will be affected by these checks.

 If a player wishes to make a net deposit above £5,000, operators are required by the BGC's new rule to conduct a risk assessment.  All of this is valid for one month, or the same amount of time.  The purpose of this is to determine whether there are any signs of danger or to learn more about their financial status.

 Players between the ages of 18 and 24 will be subject to the risk assessment once their monthly net deposit reaches £2,500.

 Can you tell me what the risk assessment comprises?
 At least one method from the code must be part of the risk evaluation.  Here they are:

 A more secure client engagement centred upon gambling.  A two-way live chat or phone call will be used to declare the customer's income. The affordability of the player will also be assessed.  This involves gathering information like their work title and yearly earnings in order to project their revenue;
 An examination of data that is freely available online.  Records kept by Companies House, such as winnings and filings; Data provided by the client;
 Statistical data compiled by an outside entity whose operations are subject to legislative oversight.
 Equally valid are comparable methods.  An operator must move the risk assessment into the increased consideration category if it classifies activities as high-risk.

 Customers are subject to heightened consideration checks if their net deposits above £25,000 in any rolling 12-month period.  Operators can evaluate this procedure using customer winnings and net position.

 To combat what it calls "intrusive document checks," the BGC and the Commission are draughting a new anti-money laundering code.

 An incomplete answer is not provided by this code, however it does help address the problem of intrusive document checks, according to the press release.  "Accordingly, a new Code on Anti-Money Laundering checks is currently being developed by the BGC and the GC; these checks will also initiate document requests."

 Progress could be brought about in the meanwhile by code.
 According to BGC CEO and acting chair Michael Dugher, the code is a step towards eliminating document checks for individuals who are currently subject to them.

 Despite the intense public discussion, he argued that the code represented positive strides towards a solution.  "Many people who are currently subject to thorough checks will have their documents removed, and the consistency of safer gambling standards will be greatly enhanced."

 The code, he continued, strengthens the regulations already in place to make gambling safer.

 This new rule offers an additional layer of protection for our members' gaming activities, which is an important point to remember.  These are exclusive to the regulated industry," he went on to say.  "Although this is a positive step in the correct path, we are fully cognisant that additional action is required."

 According to Commission CEO Andrew Rhodes, the code would permit development during the duration of the frictionless financial risk trial.

 Customer spending is the action-trigger, and this voluntary agreement will assist make sure that all participating operators are treating customers fairly and consistently.  As we run a trial run of the government-proposed frictionless financial risk assessments, we believe this code will assist in resolving the current disparities in how operators handle client expenditure triggers.

 Timeline for the first round of consultation proposals
 In this regard, the "light-touch" checks constitute the second leg of the forthcoming financial cheque system.  Two phases will comprise the light-touch inspections.  Customers having a monthly net deposit of more over £500 were the first to receive cheques.  Customers having a monthly net deposit of £150 will be checked by the second.

 The first stage will begin on August 30, 2024, and the second stage will begin on February 20, 2025.

 New regulations regarding the creation of video games, direct marketing, and the verification of age were also laid out by the Commission.  The use of autoplay, spin rates less than five seconds, and features that create the impression of control would all be outlawed in online games.

 Additionally, operators are obligated to display the total amount wagered by players as well as the duration of their gameplay.  On January 17, 2025, these modifications will be implemented.

 The 17th of January 2025 marks the beginning of the requirement that gambling companies provide players with the option to opt-in to the product kinds about which they should get information.

 Additionally, the good practice code will undergo revisions; the new version will be effective as of August 30, 2024.  Customers at brick-and-mortar establishments will be subject to age verification checks beginning at the age of 25, up from the current 21.  Venues with physical locations will also be required to institute measures to confirm the patron's age.
