UNLV study advises operators to change their gambling strategy
According to the findings of a recent study, the conventional tactic of "reducing the house edge" has no impact on the player's outcome at all. The term "house edge" refers to the advantage that a casino has over the player over the long run when the amount wagered is compared to the amount won.
Anthony Lucas and A. K. Singh, both of whom are professors at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, were the ones who carried out the research and came to the conclusion that there was no statistical difference in the number of spins observed for each individual gambler even when the house edge was more than doubled.
In this study, which was based on a simulation of 100 years' worth of weekly play, the results produced by reel slot machines with hidden house edges that were distinct from one another but had the same wagering regulations were compared and analyzed.
The findings led to the conclusion that the number of spins on each game was "remarkably comparable," notwithstanding significant variations in the advantage enjoyed by the house.
Lucas provided an explanation, saying, "If individual players don't see results from their play that allow them to discern variances in the house advantage, then there is a chance for gaming operators to keep a higher share of the wagers." Even seemingly insignificant shifts in the regularity of large jackpots can have a significant impact on the total money generated by slot machines.
According to the study, casino operators and game developers should reconsider their understanding of how game mechanics affect the individual gambler's experience because new generations of games are entering the market and players are becoming more interested in the nuances of their gaming experience (while looking for a better return on their bets).
Lucas came to the following conclusion: "When you're up against decades of well established explanations of how slot machines work, change is naturally tough for all of us in this profession." As a direct consequence of this, it will be some time before any fresh ways of thinking about the issue can acquire hold.
